Vintage Interior Design
The Vintage Interior Design is for those who appreciate the elegance and simplicity of old things such as antiques and small vintage trinkets. The design demonstrates a special old world glamour of the previous era while providing a cozy yet elegant atmosphere. It is also about embracing the antiques and enjoying them by either repairing or refurbishing them. This can be achieved by combining, vintage pieces that can be found in flea markets and antique shops, with some modern pieces for a Urban or Modern Vintage look. If antiques are out of the budget for you, you can also hunt for pre-loved vintage decorative items in some warehouse sales in Singapore.

Characteristics of Vintage Interior Design – Tips on How to Achieve the Look
Opt for soft earth tones such as gray, beige, cream. Pastel colors such as pale lilac and pale pink can also be used.
Old antiques that are made of natural materials such as wood and stone would be ideal. Natural fabrics are also preferred. Furnishings should reflect the trends of the decade’s past, usually items that are more than 30 years old. Some examples of vintage furniture include coffee tables and bedside tables with carved handles, sofa and chairs with rounded carved legs. Bronze and brass fittings will also add to the vintage feel.
Choose full-length curtains in vintage style decorated with floral patterns. Lace elements incorporated throughout the design of decorative lace napkins on tables would certainly add to the vintage feel. Upholstery made with natural fabrics would be preferred and they should either fit the background or be a little brighter. Decorative pillows with floral patterns can also be used.
Finishing and Décor
Abrasions and cracks give a lived-in look, creating a peaceful and nostalgic atmosphere. Paint the ceilings white and if possible add in some subtle roughness to achieve the aged look. Wooden flooring is also preferred.
Decoration in Vintage style is impossible without flowers, both natural and in pattern. Such floral prints in the fabrics, tiles, and potted plants can also add to the vintage charm. Vintage items such as antique clocks, lamps, vases, wooden carved frames and figurines will help to create the desired atmosphere. These items can be found in antique shops or flea markets, or from pre-loved items sale. A large mirror with an elaborate frame will definitely complement any room. It can be placed in the living room or above the sink in the bathroom. Frames with black and white pictures can be used to decorate the walls as well.
Shabby Chic – A Variation of the Vintage Style
Another similar style will be the Shabby Chic. It is first originated in the 1980’s in the United Kingdom. Compared to the traditional vintage style, it presents a less glamourous, softer and more feminine feel. This design style is very similar to Country Cottage style but with the use of more old and aged décor items to emphasize the Vintage look.
New items can be distressed to achieve the appearance of an antique or choose furnishings that exudes the appearance of age. Wooden furniture can be distressed and covered in sanded milk paint to emphasize the wear and tear.
Cotton and old French linens are preferred. The colour palette should consists of mainly white and pastel colors. These items can be easily purchased from major departmental stores in Singapore. Some popular décor items such as vintage chandeliers and anything with roses on it would serve every well as decorative items for finishing touches.
